Jean Philipse (1949) verstaat de kunst van avontuurlijk leven. Reizen is zijn manier van leven. Altijd nieuwsgierig naar nieuwe ervaringen. Met zijn fotoboeken heeft hij al veel mensen weten te raken. In welke uithoek hij ook komt, voor zijn camera lijkt iedereen blij hem te zien. Met deze verhalenbundel komen zijn foto’s nog meer tot leven. Zijn verhalen beginnen in het Uden van 1954 en eindigen op een trapveldje ergens in Madagaskar. Met zijn vaak bijtende humor en zelfspot neemt hij je in zijn beeldend beschreven observaties kris kras mee de wereld over. Eenzaamheid, liefde, rampspoed en ontbering ontbreken niet. Maar wat vooral indruk maakt zijn de soms terloopse, soms indringende ontmoetingen met wie zijn pad ook maar kruist. Met een grenzeloze hunkering naar het onbekende reist en raast hij voort.

There is no way to Lhasa, Lhasa is the way

"There is no path to happiness, happiness is the path" the Shakyamuni Buddha spoke 2500 years ago. For centuries, the Tibetans have put that right in their ears and lived as much as possible thid way. And it worked. Life after life, after life. Suddenly that was over. Around 1950 the misery began. And that is not over yet. Meanwhile, the cultural heritage of the highest country in the world has been virtually destroyed by half a century of Chinese occupation. There is not much left of the capital Lhasa in particular. Slowly a kind of Boedisneyland is created here to allow as much foreign and domestic money as possible to slip into the wrong pockets. Only 4% of the area of ​​Lhasa is inhabited by Tibetans. But with Losar, despite how astonishingly many Tibetans have already fled, been jailed or murdered, the capital is flooded by these fantastic people.

Losar is the Tibetan New Year and is celebrated in Lhasa as exuberantly as possible. From all over the country the Tibetans come to their capital to visit the most important sanctuaries, picnic with friends and make sacrifices. This book tries to give an image report of the festivities and life in the capital of Tibet during Losar in 2004. Losar takes place on the first day of the first month according to the lunar calendar. It is the most important festival in Tibet and is originally a celebration of the first blossom on the peach tree.

Papua New Guinea ligt in het midden van een lange ketting van eilanden die vanaf Singapore in Zuid-Oost Azië tot diep in de Stille Oceaan loopt. Het is een land van grote contrasten waarbij je ineens ver terug in de tijd geworpen kunt worden. Faces, Feathers and Fluffy Hair is een verslag van reis door dit fascinerende land. Gezichten, veren en kroeshaar (papua is een oud Portugees woord voor kroeshaar), stammen, familieclans, totaal verschillende culturen, onmogelijke veel kleuren en 800 talen. Dat is PNG., niet echt een toeristen land -het staat bekend als een van de gevaarlijkste landen ter wereld- met nauwelijks informatie buiten de begaande paden beschikbaar werd door Jean Philipse bereisd te voet, per vliegtuig, per boot en met een 4WD waarmee bijna alle beschikbare wegen bereden werden. Hij beklom de hoogste top, liep kniehoog door vulkaanstof, reed wegen die voor toeristen verboden waren en bezocht festivals en singsings waar de bevolking van Papua nog steeds hun unieke en vaak vreemde dansen en gebruiken vieren. De beelden zijn vaak ongelooflijk en de verhalen geven veel achtergrond informatie over de mensen, het land en de grappige dingen die je overkomen op dit geweldige eilandenrijk.

Born Beautiful was the first book with travel pictures. Digital printing had just started and the quality wasn't that good. But for a New Year's gift it was greatly appreciated. Together with Karin Jonkers we tried to capture people from all over the world.
